Friday Fashion Face-off: The Micro-Dress

Is there a proper length for a tennis skirt?

Even asking the question makes me squirm a bit inside. I like doling out a little good-humored snark, but playing hemline cop doesn’t appeal to me. Still, I can’t help looking askance when I see the lengths, or should I say the shorts, to which some young women will go. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: The Micro-Dress”

Friday Fashion Face-off: Team Uniforms

As promised, we’re voting on team uniforms today! In Wednesday’s post, I weighed the pros and cons of uniforms. Although my team has never worn them, I’m wondering if it might be time for a change.

Sadly, most of the team uniforms I see online are uninspired, just a solid top and skirt in the most basic of hues. Yawn. Perhaps the manufacturers keep it simple knowing that it’s easier for a team to achieve consensus that way–no one’s thrilled with the choice, but no one’s refusing to wear it either.

I can’t foist mediocre tenniswear on my team–we deserve way better than that! So I’m choosing my nominees from the regular, non-team collections. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Team Uniforms”

Match Day Attire

I was toying with a couple of ideas for today’s blog, not really feeling any of them, until I read Martha’s funny comment on yesterday’s post. If you didn’t see it, I posted a clip of the absurdly over-produced pre-match player introduction at the St. Petersburg Open, complete with gyrating girls and glow-in-the-dark racquets.

Martha suggested her team adopt the girls’ belly-baring attire as their team uniform for the upcoming season. And then it hit me–I should write about team uniforms! Continue reading “Match Day Attire”

Now THAT’S How to Make an Entrance…

LittleYellowBall doesn’t usually publish on Tuesdays, but I happened to catch the very beginning of a St. Petersburg tournament on television this morning. It was the wackiest, most preposterous, over-the-top player introduction I’ve ever seen. I just had to share it with you.

The video’s only two minutes long–I think it’s the best two minutes I’ve had today. Enjoy!

Friday Fashion Face-off: U.S. Open Worst-Dressed Award

Is it mean to do a worst-dressed poll? Probably. Are we going to do it anyway? Yes. It’s all in good fun. Besides, the players earn good money for wearing these outfits and getting people talking. They don’t really have cause to complain if not all the talk is favorable.

Here, then, are my nominees for worst dressed at the U.S. Open. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: U.S. Open Worst-Dressed Award”

Friday Fashion Face-off: U.S. Open Best-Dressed Woman Award

We’re finally here. The last best-dressed player poll of the year. (Sniff.)

But before we get all misty-eyed, let’s talk about Caroline Wozniacki. As you might recall, I’ve been disappointed in the Stella McCartney outfits Wozniacki has worn in previous U.S. Opens. Her stunning Wimbledon dress from just a few weeks ago got my hopes up that we here in the States would finally be treated to an outfit worthy of the lovely Dane.

Instead, McCartney gave us this: Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: U.S. Open Best-Dressed Woman Award”

Friday Fashion Face-off: U.S. Open Best-Dressed Man Award

The U.S. Open is well under way, which can mean only one thing. It’s time to pick our best-dressed man of the slam!

I thought choosing the best dressed for Wimbledon would be hard, what with the color restriction and all. But I’m actually finding this slam a bit tougher. No one is truly standing out for me, but we’ll just have to muddle through with what we have. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: U.S. Open Best-Dressed Man Award”

Friday Fashion Face-off: Fun-Sized Edition

You know how the runt of the litter is usually the feisty one? Scrappiness grows out of necessity: Fight or starve.

Same principle applies in tennis. Some of the most dogged competitors on the pro tour are average-sized, or even petite. Too often, we treat shortness as some sort of handicap, when in fact it can be a source of strength. The current #1 on the women’s tour, Simona Halep, is the shortest of the top ten, at a compact but powerful 5 feet 6: Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Fun-Sized Edition”

Friday Fashion Face-off: Adidas Adidas and Cult Jam

(🎶 Hit the beat, now…🎶)

Did you catch the Zverev brothers play last week at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C.?

Alexander (familiarly known as Sascha) is the groundstroke-whipping baseliner. He’s widely regarded as the successor to the top of the game when the Big Four finally retire.

Older brother Mikhail (Mischa) plays the rare serve-and-volley game. Though less successful than Sascha, Mischa brings equal entertainment value to the court. Last week’s match was the first time the brothers have met in an ATP-level tournament.

I was hanging out on the couch, enjoying the match, when my husband walked in front of the television screen and stopped. Sascha was serving, and my husband made an involuntary noise of disgust. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Adidas Adidas and Cult Jam”
