What the heck is going on at Wimbledon? We’re only halfway through the third round, and we’ve already lost eight of the top ten women. They’re dropping like flies over there, so maybe we better get to the best-dressed award before any more fall by the wayside. Friday Fashion Face-off: The Greatest Match Ever Played
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the epic Nadal-Federer Wimbledon final, generally acknowledged to be the greatest match in the history of tennis. I haven’t seen enough matches to weigh in on that claim, but it was certainly a beaut. (For those interested in revisiting the match, the Tennis Channel will be airing a retrospective titled Strokes of Genius this Sunday, July 1 at 8 p.m. EST.)
As always with these two, it’s the clash of styles that made this battle so wildly entertaining. You have the Swiss gentleman, all smooth elegance and balletic grace, versus the Spanish upstart, all popping biceps and ripping power. With such a stark choice, it’s easy to pick a favorite, although the true tennis fan surely has to admire both men. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: The Greatest Match Ever Played”
Friday Fashion Face-off: Flower Power
We’re going snark-free for this week’s Fashion Face-off! No–wait! Don’t leave! We can still have fun. And we’ll be better people for it. I promise.
As much as I love a good snark, I saw two absolutely fantastic tennis outfits this week, both with floral skirts. They just knocked all the meanness out of me. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Flower Power”
The Friday Fashion Face-off Best-Dressed Woman Award
The men’s and women’s tours may have migrated to grass, but here at LittleYellowBall, we’re still knee-deep in the clay. Today we’re voting on the ladies of the French Open. Continue reading “The Friday Fashion Face-off Best-Dressed Woman Award”
The Friday Fashion Face-off Best-Dressed Man Award
This year’s French Open is winding down–as I write this, Nadal and del Potro are battling it out for a spot in the final. (Well, the first set was a battle. Now it’s just a beatdown.)
It’s time to take stock of the year’s French Open fashion. We’ll vote on the best-dressed man and leave the women for next Friday. Continue reading “The Friday Fashion Face-off Best-Dressed Man Award”
Friday Fashion Face-off: The Comic Book Edition
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard that Serena’s strutting her stuff in a black catsuit at the French Open. (And if you have been living under a rock, come back out. It’s dark and wormy under there.)
I wasn’t going to touch the catsuit in the face-off. I figured she’d had plenty of press on it already. But when the topic comes up on the tennis court, I’m immediately asked if I’m going to include it in the blog. The consensus seems to be that I have to. So, for you rock dwellers out there, here’s the catsuit… Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: The Comic Book Edition”
Friday Fashion Face-off: A Study in Brown
Novak Djokovic’s career has been in something of a tailspin over the last year. Plagued by persistent elbow pain and an admitted drop in motivation, he axed his entire team, including his long-time coach, to shake himself out of his slump. He brought on Andre Agassi as an advisor, only to dump him a few months later.
In the last few weeks, he has reunited with his old coach, and we can only hope he’ll return to form soon. He won a tough three-setter against Kei Nishikori today and looked to be rediscovering some of his old drive.
While I was watching this match, I suddenly noticed another change Djokovic has made. He’s no longer sporting Uniqlo. Instead he’s being sponsored by Lacoste which today outfitted him in this red and white ensemble: Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: A Study in Brown”
Friday Fashion Face-off: Serena vs. Serena
We’re back for another round of Friday Fashion Face-off, the perfect way to kick off the weekend. It’s time to kick back, sip your Chardonnay, and contemplate Serena’s abs. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Serena vs. Serena”
Friday Fashion Face-off: The Sock Edition
No, not Jack Sock. Tennis socks.
When you hear the term tennis sock, you probably picture the cute low-cut socks that sit just below the ankle. If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember they once had colorful pompoms on the back. I may have even owned a few pairs of these myself.
Tennis players still wear those socks, of course, minus the pompoms. But every so often you see someone in knee socks. Bethanie Mattek-Sands was the first player I ever saw in knee-high legwear, often in combination with pink hair and eye black. Bethanie wears compression socks, but based on the photo below, I’m guessing she’d wear wacky knee socks even without a medical reason. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: The Sock Edition”
Friday Fashion Face-off
In last week’s Borg/McEnroe face-off, we ridiculed the short-shorts of the early ’80s. But over the last year or so, I’ve noticed men’s shorts creeping up again. Nadal was one of the first to raise his hemline, but others soon followed. He’s an interesting fashion trendsetter, although those early pirate pants never quite caught on.
