Friday Fashion Face-off: Best-dressed Man, Wimbledon 2021

Every blog day is a joy, but some days you just have to work a little harder for it. Case in point: The “best white outfit on a guy” contest. It’s always a challenge to find some detail—any detail—that can set one outfit apart in a sea of bland undershirts. Things got so dire at one point that I even considered nominating Novak Djokovic!

But the specter of the twirpy Serb on my best-dressed list brought me back to my senses. I redoubled my efforts and finally identified these three worthy candidates.

Nominee #1: Roger Federer

Roger’s always dapper, but you might be wondering what’s so special about this Uniqlo outfit.

What distinguishes it for me is the subtle checked pattern on the shirt. Go ahead and zoom in on it. Understated and elegant—quintessential Wimbledon.

Nominee #2 Sebastian Korda

Adidas offers another take on white-on-white patterns. Zoom in and check out the vertical stripes which fade in and out of prominence depending on the lighting. The rising American star makes the outfit his own with the funky white headband and gold chain. Super stylish!

Nominee #3: Karen Khachanov

No subtlety for the Russian player, just a plain white shirt cut exquisitely. Maybe I don’t read enough fashion articles (or any, for that matter), but it seems to me that a garment’s drape doesn’t get enough attention in menswear, particularly in sportswear. The flow of this simple Nike staple elevates it above undershirt status. The backwards cap only heightens the raw masculine power of this look.

Interestingly, all three nominees are still alive in the tournament, and Korda and Khachanov play each other Monday morning. Could their excellent ensembles have given them the edge needed to make it to the second week? Maybe the clothes really do make the man.
