Friday Fashion Face-off: Best-dressed Man, Wimbledon 2021

Every blog day is a joy, but some days you just have to work a little harder for it. Case in point: The “best white outfit on a guy” contest. It’s always a challenge to find some detail—any detail—that can set one outfit apart in a sea of bland undershirts. Things got so dire at one point that I even considered nominating Novak Djokovic!

But the specter of the twirpy Serb on my best-dressed list brought me back to my senses. I redoubled my efforts and finally identified these three worthy candidates. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Best-dressed Man, Wimbledon 2021”

Friday Fashion Face-off: Best-dressed Man, French Open 2021

I know you’re all itching to get to today’s nominees, but first let me update you on my fantasy league.

I’m currently in SIXTH place (out of 117) on the women’s side of the draw! That’s pretty damn good for someone who’s new to fantasy leagues. My picks: Sabalenka, Gauff, Collins, Swiatek, Jabeur, Pegula, Sorribes Tormo and Badosa. (The crossed-out names have been eliminated from the tournament.)

And on the men’s side, I’m 144th out of 166th. Wow. That’s embarrassing. But my four players still in contention are John Isner, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner and some guy named Nadal. I’m feeling pretty good about my chances of cracking the top 100 over the next week.

Now, aren’t you sorry you didn’t participate? Okay, I didn’t give you much notice. Maybe you’ll make a fantasy team for Wimbledon.

Without further ado, let’s get to the best-dressed men at the French Open. Ooh la la! Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Best-dressed Man, French Open 2021”

Friday Fashion Face-off***: French Open Worst-Dressed Award

(***Or, Tuesday Tennis Togs Take-down?)

Shame on me for letting our worst-dressed award day pass by without a poll. Saying I was busy is a poor excuse because snarking at fugly clothes should be my top priority, even more than improving my tennis game.

Let’s not waste any more time, then. Our nominees for worst-dressed player at the French Open are [drum roll]: Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off***: French Open Worst-Dressed Award”

Friday Fashion Face-off: Flavors of Fed

We’re well into autumn, what I think of as the long dry season in professional tennis. Once the U.S. Open ends, I find it hard to muster much enthusiasm for the year’s remaining tournaments, at least until the tour finals. I’ve been looking at these players all year. I’m tired of them. They look a little tired as well.

To make matters worse, clothing manufacturers don’t introduce new lines in the post-major dregs of the season. It’s enough to make a tennis blogger question why she started a weekly fashion face-off in the first place. What in the world was I thinking?! Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Flavors of Fed”

Friday Fashion Face-off: U.S. Open Worst-Dressed Award

Is it mean to do a worst-dressed poll? Probably. Are we going to do it anyway? Yes. It’s all in good fun. Besides, the players earn good money for wearing these outfits and getting people talking. They don’t really have cause to complain if not all the talk is favorable.

Here, then, are my nominees for worst dressed at the U.S. Open. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: U.S. Open Worst-Dressed Award”

Friday Fashion Face-off: Wimbledon Best-Dressed Man Award

For the first time, I’ve been dreading writing the Friday Fashion Face-off. How am I supposed to find best-dressed man nominees in a sea of white short-sleeve shirts and shorts? What a snooze-fest. But I guess this is why I make the big bucks.

I considered just nominating the four semi-finalists, but that would leave us with Rafa Nadal and three of the geekiest-looking guys on tour–John Isner, Kevin Anderson, and Novak Djokovic. (I’m a vegetarian, but Djokovic really needs to start eating some steak. Seriously anemic-looking.) Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: Wimbledon Best-Dressed Man Award”

Friday Fashion Face-off: The Greatest Match Ever Played

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the epic Nadal-Federer Wimbledon final, generally acknowledged to be the greatest match in the history of tennis. I haven’t seen enough matches to weigh in on that claim, but it was certainly a beaut. (For those interested in revisiting the match, the Tennis Channel will be airing a retrospective titled Strokes of Genius this Sunday, July 1 at 8 p.m. EST.)

As always with these two, it’s the clash of styles that made this battle so wildly entertaining. You have the Swiss gentleman, all smooth elegance and balletic grace, versus the Spanish upstart, all popping biceps and ripping power. With such a stark choice, it’s easy to pick a favorite, although the true tennis fan surely has to admire both men. Continue reading “Friday Fashion Face-off: The Greatest Match Ever Played”
