I’m trying to catch up on my New Year’s resolution to write at least three posts a month. Today’s post counts toward January’s total. Am I allowed to do that? Of course I am. It’s my blog.
The ladies at this year’s Australian Open runway didn’t disappoint. Nobody blew me away, mind you. But it was a respectable showing for the year’s first Slam.
Nominee #1: Anett Kontaveit
It’s always kind of weird nominating a player I don’t know. Kontaveit isn’t a nobody—she’s ranked 31 in the world. She just happens to have flown under my radar. Given her run to the quarterfinals, I’m sure I’ll be familiar with her game soon enough.
Though I can’t comment on her play, I can comment on this sweet little dress by Lacoste. I love the white edging around the half-zip and the way the yellow on the zipper picks up the yellow on the dress’s side panels.
Nominee #2: Caroline Wozniacki
What outfit would you wear to your retirement party? This one? Hmm, maybe not. Your retirement party is about YOU, and your clothes ought to say, “Man, are you ever gonna miss me when I’m gone!” (Or maybe a simple “So long, suckers!”)
Wozniacki played the final matches of her career at the Australian Open, where she won the title in 2018. I was hoping for a valedictory dress with a little more pizzazz. Maybe a hot red color, or a little rhinestone bedazzling. Something to set this tournament apart from the hundreds of others she’s played over the years.
But we’ll have to make do with what we have. It is a nice dress. It does look good on her. It’s totally wearable for the club player. And let’s face it, Stella McCartney could have stuck Wozniacki in something like the “Monochromatic Mess” dress of 2009:
Or the “Adult Diaper” dress of 2013:
When you consider the possible alternatives, you’d have to call this year’s farewell number a win.
Nominee #3: Bethanie Mattek-Sands
Would you wear this getup? I wouldn’t. Even in my 20s, this would have looked ridiculous on me. It’s just not my personality.
On Mattek-Sands, this outfit seriously rocks. I love the contrast of the girly pink pleated skirt paired with the bad-ass black knee-socks and wristbands. The spiky blonde ‘do and midriff-baring top kicks up the fun to another level.
Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray lost in the super tiebreak in the mixed doubles final, but this outfit is a total winner for me.
I have to disagree with you here. Mattek-Sands should be on your worst-dressed list! That get up looks very 1980s.
I do agree that Wozniacki could have been wearing something more attention-grabbing, but her outfit is so much better than the older ones. Still, if she wasn’t playing her top game, maybe she didn’t want to draw too much attention.
Still, no matter how you look at it, Kontaveit wins this contest. And I look forward to seeing her again. I bet she will be in the list a lot.
What’s wrong with the 80s? ☹️
She looks awesome. It’s the perfect match of outfit and personality.
That said, I wouldn’t want to see this look become a trend! 😂
