We’re back for another round of Friday Fashion Face-off, the perfect way to kick off the weekend. It’s time to kick back, sip your Chardonnay, and contemplate Serena’s abs.
Is anyone watching the HBO special, Being Serena? The five-part series chronicles the champion’s pregnancy, delivery, health scare, and battle to return to top form. The first episode aired on Wednesday. I enjoyed the peek behind the scenes and the grainy footage of her childhood in Compton.
Weirdly, I was surprised to see Serena’s late-term pregnancy belly. What is there to be surprised about? I don’t know. It’s not like I don’t know what a pregnant belly looks like.
Maybe it’s just because she’s…well, Serena, with that awe-inspiring physique. The full-term pregnancy made her look so much more vulnerable. Still awesome, but a different kind of awesome.
So while I’m obsessing inappropriately about Serena’s belly, I thought we’d do a fashion face-off of her crop-top outfits. The first is from the 2004 U.S. Open, all denim and studs and attitude.

At the 2016 French Open, Serena bared her abs again, albeit a little more modestly. No denim, no studs. Still plenty of attitude.

Once again, we have a two-part poll. You can never have too many polls.
If you’re going to go belly, gotta go all-belly. Plus, if you got the guns, gotta show off the guns. I don’t have guns, but if I did I’d wear a shirt like that every day. Well, maybe without the missing midriff. And bigger studs.
I agree! It’s the sleeves that really ruin the newer outfit. But the flouncy extra skirt isn’t helping either. I wasn’t expecting to pick the denim and studs, but I think it’s clearly the better look for her.
If my opponent came out looking like 2004 Serena, I’d run back and hide in the locker room.
